David W. Beck is co-founder and managing partner of the firm and focuses his practice in the areas of entertainment, media, technology, and business. His business and legal affairs experience includes the representation of studios, production companies, producers, and writers in connection with numerous entertainment legal matters at the development, production, and post-production stages (including: chain-of-title analysis; negotiating and drafting cast, producer, director, and writer agreements; production legal matters; and distribution matters). David's extensive and varied background also enables him to serve in the role of outside general counsel to a number of corporate clients.
Prior to joining the firm, he was a corporate and transactional attorney with experience in a wide spectrum of legal issues, including general business and corporate matters, real estate transactions, mergers and acquisitions, securities regulation, international banking and business transactions, and civil litigation. He has advised individuals, small and mid size companies, large multinational corporations, and foreign governments. He has also consulted to 20th Century Fox in the past and was a guest speaker at the 2009 Producer’s Guild of America “Produced By” conference.
David is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, where he received an Artium Baccalaurei degree in Economics and Political Science in 1994. He attended the Saint Louis University School of Law and received his Juris Doctorate degree and a Certificate in International and Comparative Law in 1999. That same year he was admitted to the State Bar of Missouri. Mr. Beck was admitted to the State Bar of California in 2002.
Matt Cooper is co-founder of the firm and was admitted to the State Bar of California in 2003. He has an extensive background in entertainment law. Matt was formerly Director, Business & Legal Affairs with Los Angeles based entertainment company Intermedia Films, which produced an eclectic list of titles ranging from "Adaptation" to "Terminator 3" and "Alexander". His responsibilities at Intermedia included business and legal affairs work (including negotiation and drafting cast, producer, director, and writer agreements for motion picture projects), production legal matters, addressing post-production legal delivery issues for domestic and foreign releases, drafting distribution agreements, and administration of the company's film library. Subsequently, Matt worked as an Associate in the Entertainment, Media and Communications Department of Pryor Cashman LLP where his business and legal affairs experience included film distribution matters, film financing matters, and representing producers, directors, financiers, and film production companies.
Matt was also Production Legal Consultant to New Line Cinema’s "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy where he negotiated clearances and access for all filming locations, as well as addressing numerous other legal, environmental, and production related issues for the project. Matt also served as Legal Manager to Park Road Post Production Ltd, helping to establish filmmaker Peter Jackson’s state-of-the-art post-production facility. Prior to this Matt practiced law for two of New Zealand’s preeminent commercial law firms, Bell Gully and Russell McVeagh.
Matt is an alumnus of the University of Auckland, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts in 1996.
